i watched all 14 one piece movies in a week so here’s my guide to them
one piece to date has 14 movies which sounds incredibly daunting. i’m here to tell you that it really isn’t and that you should definitely check them out. but, i understand that some people may be a little hesitant, or just unwilling to watch this many titles and so i have i have provided my own rankings as well as short reviews which i hope might be helpful, there is also a list at the end of the 9 movies from the 14 i think you should absolutely watch
i previously made this post last year but my rankings have changed since then and so this is the refreshed and updated version with a few tweaks here and there as well as the updated rankings
i hope it might be helpful :)
okay let’s start this off with the worst
14. One Piece: The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventure in Alabasta (2007)
where do i start... the animation quality is so bad in this movie and i honestly don’t know why, it looks awful compared to the actual episodes. i would not recommend anyone to watch this instead of the actual full length arc as you will not truly experience alabasta. again i would have preferred a new story. it’s truly a miserable watch, unless you’ve already seen alabasta a bunch of times and just want a quick refresher, but even then i would probably still say just watch the original.
13. One Piece 3D: Straw Hat Chase (2011)
now i’ll be honest, i expected nothing from this movie. ‘Straw Hat Chase’ looked set to be a CG 3D nightmare but ended up really surprising me. and no, i’m not saying it’s good, because it’s not, and the whole thing looks like a One Piece fighting game for the PS2 more than it does a movie, but it’s only thirty minutes long and really doesn’t hang around long enough to leave a bad taste in your mouth. the plot is as simple as ‘luffy loses his hat and him and the straw hats chase the thing that took it’. it could honestly be worse that’s what i’m saying and it’s so short that it’s honestly worth a watch.
12. One Piece: Chopper’s Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals (2002)
okay so before i started this film i accidentally saw a bunch of reviews while trying to find out how long it was and it sounded like it was going to be a struggle to get through this. it really wasn’t anywhere near as bad people were making it out to be. it’s basically chopper, a bunch of animals, the one piece trademark annoying kid character, and the straw hats. the story really isn’t great and despite only having a 50 minute runtime it still feels like it could have been shorter but overall it wasn’t too miserable a watch.
11. One Piece: Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Cherry Blossom (2008)
In the same way as 'One Piece: The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventure in Alabasta' I would have preferred two original narrative films over re-hashes of existing arcs.
However... unlike Desert Princess this film is set in a alternate universe where they've already helped Vivi so she doesn't make an appearance, Robin and Franky have both already joined the crew, and the Straw Hats are sailing on the Sunny. This concept really does bring something new to the arc and makes it a lot more enjoyable to watch purely thanks to these additional elements.
If you like watching the crew dynamic then this film has a lot of it as it has the extended (at that time) Straw Hats. We get to see how these additional members come to tackle Nami's illness and Drum Island which is really interesting.
It's definitely worth a watch and I will admit that I previously had this film 2nd last and now it's much further up. It's a film that grows on you over time.
10. One Piece: The Movie (2000)
so this movie barely even qualifies as a movie. my best way of describing it is it feels like they had some spare episodes they didn’t end up using and were like, ‘hey let’s splice them together and make it a movie’. it’s fifty minutes so it’s pretty harmless, and it’s honestly nice to see the old, old, old animation style again with the straw hats looking so fresh faced. it loses marks for not having sanji in it despite him being in the OP (i’m kidding obviously... sorta’), but it still has some nice moments and the tone of the movie being comedic is really refreshing compared to the world ending villains and darkness that follows further down the road. it’s humble beginnings One Piece.
9. One Piece: Clockwork Island Adventure (2001)
i had a lot of trouble trying to work out where to put this movie because i honestly really enjoyed it. i definitely liked it more than the next two movies i’m about to discuss but i couldn’t justify moving it two places higher when it’s not feature length. like ‘One Piece: The Movie’ and ‘Chopper’s Kingdom’ it’s only fifty minutes, which is actually a shame in this one because the story is good. finally having the full (as in early early series full) crew together makes it shine and the scene near the beginning of the crew having rented the swan pedalo from the wedding place is just SO good (see gif above). if you’re going to watch any of the first three films then please make it this one.
8. One Piece: Curse of the Sacred Sword (2004)
zoro lore. that’s... that’s literally the movie. the problem lies in the execution rather than the premise though which is so annoying because this film could have been amazing. the fact that the movies are non-canon are probably one of their biggest problems, they know that none of the shit they tell you can be placed against the lore of the series so instead of inventing something really good about a character they hold back and instead provide you, in this movie’s case, with ‘here’s an original character that zoro knew when he was younger, and they were friends, and they fought together, and they made a promise with a sword’, and that’s the 95 minute runtime right there. the interesting stuff is at the beginning where a possessed zoro goes against the village and gets into a fight with sanji, which the cook loses. everything after that point is very... meh. i looked at how long was left a lot on this one. if you’re gonna’ watch it just watch the start and the scenes with the straw hats.
7. One Piece: Giant Mecha Soldier of Karakuri Castle (2006)
this film is unfortunate. ‘Giant Mecha Soldier’ is the seventh movies in the One Piece... (what even is the word for a movie series of fourteen entries... *opens dictionary.com) tetradecagon... ology? anyway... it’s the seventh movie, and sadly for ‘Giant Mecha Soldier’ it follows ‘One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island’ which you’re going to hear a lot more about later. if you, like i did, watch these films back to back then going from a film as strong as ‘Baron Omatsuri’ straight to this is a deep dive. ‘Giant Mecha Soldier’ isn’t bad by any standard. the riddles the straw hats have to solve are fun, the way they go about doing so is enjoyable to watch, and the movie also has robin, which is always a plus, but it just doesn’t have the same heart as ‘Baron Omatsuri’. it’s so bland and it shows. a main criticism i have for these movies is that in a world as vibrant and imaginative as One Piece they play them so fucking safe the majority of the time
6. One Piece Film: GOLD (2016)
‘One Piece Film: GOLD’ despite it’s flashy-ness and beautiful HD look, is sadly bland. so much wasted potential with this one, and don’t even get me started on how they just dumped zoro’s ass out of the movie for three-quarters of the runtime. it’s fun, the plot is... fine i guess, and it’s comedic enough where i don’t downright dislike it. it also briefly has sabo in it (bonus). i do however have to comment on the fact that everything and i do mean everything in this movie is CG, with the expection of the characters of course. it’s okay at first but even before you’ve hit the half-hour mark you’re tired of seeing the same computer generated buildings. i don’t want to use the word lazy, because any animated movie at 120 minutes even with heavy CG will have an obscene amount of work put into it by incredibly talented people, but the backgrounds really do sour the taste of this movie. it’s also WAY too long, it does not deserve this two-hour runtime. simple tweaks to the plot would have improved it greatly. also more zoro, just saying.
5. One Piece: Dead End Adventure (2003)
‘Dead End Adventure’ is the first time the movies get genuinely good. the premise is pretty much One Piece ‘Wacky Races’ and it works so fucking well in this universe. the straw hats enter the ‘dead end competition’ against other pirates to see who can reach the island of Partia first. this movie delivers some amazing lines including the sanji one-liner which sums up One Piece perfectly “everytime it amazes me how we’re still alive”. much like the other early entries of ‘One Piece: The Movie’, and ‘Clockwork Island’ getting to see the series beginnings animation style is lovely and i’m actually a fan of the plot in this one. definitely worth a watch.
4. One Piece Film: Z
once again a lot of people would probably put this top but for me ‘Film Z’ is well-placed at number four. considering the wealth of very hyped reviews of this movie it still doesn’t rank first for me. ‘Film Z’ was a hard one to place. i love the costumes the characters wear, i love how beautiful the animation is, the runtime is a nice length, the title sequence is stunning, the relationship between the straw hats is utilised nicely, and the plot is pretty standard One Piece. i don’t have much more to say on it than it doesn’t really have that much that’s special about it but it’s intuned enough to the core of One Piece that it’s an inoffensive well-animated movie in the series.
3. One Piece: Stampede (2019)
‘Stampede’ is the 20th anniversary celebration of One Piece and it’s incredibly rich history, and it’s an absolute triumph in doing just that. i watched this film and was not only entertained throughout (which my god is not the case for a lot of these movies), but just constantly found myself smiling. getting to see every character that we’ve met along the way that made this series what it is today is really nice, not to mention the fact that you can genuinely pause this movie every half a second and find a new easter egg each time in the first portion. the painstaking attention to detail given to this movie by the animators is what makes it truly something special to watch because even if you usually despise fan service it’s pretty hard not to think ‘cooooool!’ when you see characters who have no business even being in the same place at the same time as one-hundred other awesome characters being awesome and teaming up together in this movie. ‘Stampede’ tells you what it is from the very beginning, it’s an anniversary gift to the fans who have kept One Piece alive and forever topping the Shounen Jump sales charts year in year out. it’s not trying to be something that it’s not and i honestly think that’s why it is such a strong entry. plus the ending made me cry when i first saw this back in 2019 so i’ll give them that too.
2. One Piece Film: Strong World (2009)
‘Strong World’ is a very very good movie. it’s very funny, it has the expanded crew, the world buiding is great, the straw hats have some absolutely incredible costumes, there’s a lot to love. it was written by Oda himself which really makes this movie shine. there is a moment towards the middle that is absolutely beautiful though, i won’t go into anymore detail because you need to experience it unspoilt but it’s my standout takeaway from this movie. the animation is also SO NICE. a LOT of love went into making this movie and it shows in every single frame. the colours are vibrant, the pacing is great, and it’s a lot of fun.
AND FINALLY...
1. One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island (2005)
I said you were going to hear a lot more about this one and here it is. So ‘Baron Omatsuri’ is the most un-One Piece One Piece movie they’ve made and my fucking god does it work so well. it’s got horror vibes, it’s got psychological thriller vibes, it’s framed, coloured, and shot like a horror film. the story is hands down my favourite of any of the fourteen movies in the entire series and out of every single one of them this is the one i remember the most about and the one that i want to re-watch again despite only having seen it a couple of days ago. ‘Baron Omatsuri’ sees the straw hats at each other’s throats in a place where flowers don’t grow and people have been going missing. it’s so fucking dark and the ending is... it’s incredible. the art direction in this movie is so good that again it’s beyond what you’d expect from a One Piece movie. the people that made this movie didn’t go so hard on this for no one to have seen it because it’s slap bang in the middle of a daunting list of titles. i beg of you, you can ignore every single word i’ve said for this entire post, but i’m not joking when i say that this isn’t good for a One Piece movie it’s straight up just a good movie. go watch it!
-----------------------------------
the 9 One Piece movies which are defintely worth a watch as a fan of the series:
(In Order of Release)
One Piece: The Movie

One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island
One Piece: Giant Mecha Soldier of Karakuri Castle
